Political Prisoner Ivan Kavalchuk Reconstructs Castle Even In Remand Prison
Ivan Kavalchuk

The patriot is not crushed and continues doing what he likes.

25-year-old BNTU student Ivan Kavalchuk has been kept in the pre-trial detention center for almost three months. He, along with the other defendants, is connected to the so-called "patriots' case," nn.by writes.

Student-architect Ivan Kavalchuk was in his last sixth year, and even in prison he continues to work on his diploma paper related to the Miadzel castle restoration.

"My brother Ivan is a strong man. Despite all that has happened to him recently and is happening now, he does not waste time, – Ivan's brother Aliaksei Kavalchuk says. – In addition to self-development (reading books and studying the Polish language), he spends a lot of time writing his paper on the restoration and reconstruction of the Miadzel castle. Ivan has graduated from the 6th year of the BNTU architectural faculty, only the diploma defence is left.

None of its images have reached us, but the brother did a great job on the basis of earlier excavations and studies, in which Ivan had taken part in the volunteer group.

He has created a 3D-model of the castle. To find out what the castle looked like, the brother repeatedly applied to the archives of Sweden, as namely the Swedes had destroyed it. He was inspired to do that and helped by his friend Ruslan Shoshyn (a journalist of the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita).

I can say with confidence that this is a major contribution to the history of Belarus and its development. Especially I would be pleased to learn that my son is able to find out from the school textbook that there was the Miadzel Castle and what it looked like.

I am very grateful for the help of Dzmitry Saveliyau, who has studied at BNTU and who volunteered to help Ivan with writing his work.

If this is not a unique diploma work, then, probably, there have not been many of such a kind. And what concerns our correspondence – look at the example of one of the letters."

"And our authorities consider the people, who work for our historic legacy, criminals," – Ivan Kavalchuk’s brother is indignant.
