Lithuanian MP Offers To Adopt Resolution Criticizing Belarus At PA OSCE Session

In the draft document, they demand that the Belarusian authorities must rehabilitate all political prisoners.

Lithuanian MP Laurynas Kasčiūnas proposes to adopt a resolution on Belarus at the session of the PA OSCE, which will be held in Minsk on July 5-9 , Radio Racyja reports with a reference to the BelaPAN news agency.

The draft document refers to the need of rehabilitation of political prisoners, abolition of the death penalty, and expresses concern about the construction of the Belarusian NPP.

It calls on the Belarusian authorities to ensure an open and constructive interaction with the independent civil society organizations and the political opposition.

The author of the resolution calls upon the official Minsk to rehabilitate former political prisoners and fully restore their civil and political rights, including the removal of all criminal record and restrictions on their participation in political life, including the elections.

Belarus is also urged to introduce a moratorium on the death penalty and to resume work on conducting a "comprehensive electoral reform within the boader democratic process and in cooperation with international partners." The need to fulfill the recommendations of Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), made upon the results of the elections observation in Belarus, is also stressed in the document.
