Prisoner’s Mother Goes On Hunger-Strike At Penal Colony’s Walls In Shklou

The activist has notified the Department of Corrections and the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Mahiliou about her hunger-strike.

According to the Our Right initiative, Ksenia Kavaliova announced a hunger-strike near the walls of the penal colony in Shklou. The journalists of the protivpytok.org contacted Ksenia personally to find out the reasons which pushed her to such a decisive step.

Ksenia told her son was serving punishment in the penal colony #17, and was held in the punitive confinement then. In the punitive confinement, the inmates demanded the prosecutor should come with a visit so that they could inform her about the violations which were being committed in the colony.

Last Monday, Ksenia Kavaliova had an appointment with I.N. Aldanava from the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Shklou, and asked her to visit the penal colony to question the inmates. However, the prosecutor refused to go to the colony, having referred to the absence of precise facts.

Having realized it was impossible to achieve justice, on June 26, Ksenia announced a hunger-strike near the colony’s walls, demanding a meeting with her convicted son, to make sure he was okay. The truth-seeking activist notified the Department of Corrections and the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Mahiliou about her hunger-strike.

At present moment, the colony’s administration listened to Ksenia but declined her plea for a short-term meeting. The board of the penal facility denied the facts of violation of the inmates’ rights.

Ksenia intends to continue her hunger-strike until provided a short-term meeting with her family member, in order to make sure his rights weren’t violated.
