Today Is Journalist Pavel Sharamet’s Death Day

On July 20, 2016, well-known Belarusian, Russian and Ukrainian journalist Pavel Sharamet was killed in Kiev.

The professional community lost an outstanding, brave colleague. His friends and relatives – a close person.

The car, in which Pavel was driving to work, exploded at the intersection of the central streets of Kiev. It was not possible to save him – the injuries were incompatible with life.

The police reported that the explosive under the car, which was controlled remotely, had a capacity of up to 600 grams in TNT equivalent.

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko demanded from the Special Forces to report on the progress of the investigation.

The police believe that the journalist’s professional activity became the root motive for the murder. The investigators have found out that a man and a woman put the bomb under the car. They got on video made by surveillance cameras. The Kiev police, as well as the former mayor of the capital announced a reward for the help in investigating the murder. But the investigation has not moved on until now – no suspects have been named, there are no defendants or the main lead of the motives of the crime.

On July 23, 2016, Pavel Sharamet was buried in Minsk.

"Pavel was a man who believed that truth can change the world. We also need truth as ever. About the assassin's paymaster, the authors of this arrogant crime. Not only for Pavel, but for the journalism at large. If we love Pavel, the search for this truth should be a matter of honor for each of us," – Zhanna Litvina, the ex-chairman of the Belarusian Association of Journalists, said during the evening of Pavel Sharamet’s memory in Minsk.

On Pavel Sharamet’s death day, relatives and colleagues will visit the journalist’s grave at the Paunochnaye Cemetery near Minsk at 12 o'clock.
