REP Independent Trade Union Prepares Mass Action

The activists will demand decent working conditions and wages.

Leader of the REP Independent Trade Union Henadz Fiadynich said this in the course of his working visit around the towns of Brest region. The meetings of activists were held on July 18 in Baranavichy, Biaroza and Kobryn, praca-by.info writes.

On July 18, Henadz Fiadynich and Zinaida Mikhniuk, the trade union’s representative in Brest region, met with the activists from Baranavichy, Biaroza and Kobryn . At the meetings, they also discussed preparation for the mass events, scheduled for October 7 — the World Day for Decent Work. It is marked upon the proposal of the International Trade Union Confederation, starting since 2008. On this day, trade unions around the world campaign for decent labour conditions and for a decent salary.

October 7 is also marked in Belarus on the initiative of independent trade unions, including the REP.

— Since 2008, this date has become more important at the international level than May 1st. The existing image of the "May Day" cannot be changed: it was turned from a day of solidarity of the working people into a "spring festival". And we stand for safe productive work and a decent salary, " — Zinaida Mihniuk said. — Last year, a picket in Brest was allowed on October 7, and people from other cities came to us, as they could not get permission at home. For example, miners from Salihorsk: they arrived, stood with us in a picket with a poster "Salihorsk is Solidar with Brest".

Henadz Fiadynich spoke about the preparational work in view of the actions:

— If there are no people behind you, it means that people either don’t support you, or don’t know you, or fear to come out. That’s what needs to be clarified.

The leader of the REP Independent Trade Union stressed the true meaning of the upcoming date:

— October 7 is the World Day for Decent Work. Not a holiday! The day of struggle. That’s what we are going to mark.
