Independence Day of Belarus

On July 27, 1990 the Supreme Council of the BSSR adopted the Declaration on State Sovereignty.

This important document for our state was the first official step towards independence of Belarus.

The Declaration on State Sovereignty proclaimed "a complete state sovereignty of the Republic of Belarus as the supremacy, independence and completeness of the state power of the republic within the borders of its territory, the legitimacy of its laws, the independence of the republic in foreign relations."

It was the day the new history of our country started from.

July 27 was declared the Day of Independence of Belarus.

On August 25, 1991 the Declaration on State Sovereignty received the status of a constitutional law; it became the ground for amendments and additions to the Constitution of 1978. The new Constitution of the Republic of Belarus was adopted on March 15, 1994.

Official authorities abolished the holiday after referendum in 1996, the time Lukashenka received plenary powers. The Independence Day was celebrated on the anniversary of the liberation of Minsk from the German fascist invaders on July 3. The democratic community, as before, celebrates Independence Day on July 27.

Congratulations, friends!
