‘People Starving, Tariffs Raised’

Brest residents protest against raising the communal tariffs.

Brest activists held several actions against raising tariffs for communal services. They handed out leaflets in the central street of Brest, hang a banner in a crowded place, and made stencils on the theme all around the city, as well as a mural alongside the railway, the website revbel.org reports.

“We are urging people to struggle against raising tariffs for the communal services. Instead of increasing salaries and social allowances, the state decided to shock the labour people with new expenses, this time this refers to payment for communal services. In total, the communal services will become 20% more expensive till the end of the year, while many Belarusians cannot find a job, and those who do work receive chicken feed. For example, the tariff for drainage will grow by almost 150%, for trash disposal — by 19%.

We should not tolerate this! We are calling on people to go and self-organize with their neighbours, and boycott payment for the communal services.

If one person refuses to pay, then the authorities can collect the debt through the court, but if the whole house does not pay, then the authorities will have to go and negotiate with the residents. Defend your rights, spread information about raising tariffs! Tariffs are legalized robbery! ", — the organizers of the action declared.
