Why Officials Taking Pictures Of Biscuits Cause Bewilderment

Are there no more important problems in Belarus than the New Year’s gift sets?

Top officials Maryjana Shchotkina, Lilia Ananich and Lidziya Yarmoshyna as representatives of the Belarusian Women's Union visited the confectionery factory "Slodych", Solidarity writes.

It is reported that the participants of the meeting shared their experience in the implementation of social programs in the capital. They also offered to include biscuits and office supplies in the New Year's gift sets, in addition to sweets.

At first sight, the photos of top-ranked officials in hoods, watching the process of making biscuits, should cause positive emotions. But...

Let’s try and figure out why the photos at the background of confectionery, and the very news about the New Year’s gift sets cause rather bewilderment than tenderness.

An unprepared reader, after getting acquainted with the news, may get the impression that there are no more serious problems in our country, since the minister and the chairperson of the Central Election Commission have personally attended to the contents of New Year's gift sets.

There are no extortions in kindergartens and schools, and no repairs “on the personal initiative” of parents either. School children have finally stopped harvesting potatoes, risking their life and health. Schools have stopped faltering with programs and textbooks, and discussions about when to start classes have died away.

Parents of schoolchildren have no more pain in the head on how to equip their kids for the new academic year, without giving away the whole salary.

This is not our reality, in fact. Moreover, the list of problems that worry Belarusians much more than the biscuits, is much bigger, it’s not even limited to the above. They cannot be solved by an extra pack of “Slodych”.
