This is so dear to us, it’s worth fighting for.
Today, activist of the European Belarus civil campaign Leanid Kulakou celebrates his birthday. Leanid is a real frequenter and veteran of the protest movement in our country. Not a single protest is complete without this activist.
Charter97.org congratulated the birthday man and asked what gives him the strength to fight and go to rallies:
- I go to protest actions, because it should be officially prohibited by doctors and medicine to live like we do.
We need to achieve a better life, not only for ourselves, but also for our children and grandchildren. You can never stand aside, you need to show the true colours of our authorities. In our country, every official thinks exclusively about grabbing money for themselves, and then go beating themselves on the chest, saying they are the most honest. How can you believe such authorities?
- You can often be seen at the actions in Kurapaty. You came to the action even with your injured hand. Why protection of the memorial is so important to you?
- If we fail to protect the memorial, we will lose the nation. It is necessary to remember and honor people who have died innocently so that this will never happen again.
I personally have no one buried there, my relatives died where “The Pit” stands (“The Pit” is a monument to those shot in the Minsk ghetto - Charter97.org), but I do not divide the victims of Stalinist fascism and Hitler’s. It’s all the same. Therefore, we stand there so that the crimes never repeat.
- What advice would you like to give to Belarusians who want changes?
- Let's fight and struggle for our children and grandchildren so that they can live on their land. And when my daughter is abroad, I feel very bad, I want to touch and hug her. For this, let’s fight for our children to find happiness in their land, in their parents' land. You know, this is what is dear to me, I will fight for this.”
