Leu Marholin: Better Not To Tell About $500 Salaries in Belarus
LEU MARHOLIN

What is really happening with the economy.

Economist Leu Marholin wrote about this on Facebook:

"Finally! It has happened! The Prime Minister promised that in September the average salary will reach BYN 1000 and will not go down anymore. Everyone seems to have forgotten, by what titanic efforts wages were pulled to reach this milestone in December 2017 (for those who don’t remember, I remind: in December, the average wage rose by 18.9% compared to November). Still, the people had to wait for the fulfillment of the dream for another 9 months.

What happened? Maybe the economy has entered a period of "sustainable growth", and now we will have fun walking from one victory to another? Alas! The usual thing happened. The average salary in rubles increased as soon as the ruble weakened.

As of April 1, 2018, the US dollar was worth BYN 1.9853, as of October 1, 2018, it was BYN 2.1121, which means the Belarusian ruble fell by 6%.

So, it can be expected that wages will continue to grow as the Belarusian ruble weakens.

I don’t even mention the fact that if you start talking about the thousand salaries in Hrodna or, God forbid, in the Dubrovenski or Naroulia districts, beware - you can be beaten.”
