“Belarusians Will Vote Against Lukashenka’s Regime With Their Feet”

There are more and more reasons for discontent in the regions.

Brest activist of the European Belarus civil campaign Andrei Sharenda has told about this to Charter97.org the website, commenting on another reduction of limits on import of goods from abroad:

– You know, the limit reduction is now a very painful topic for the residents of Brest. I can say that our people still do not believe in the tightening of these limits. They hope that it will get by, but in fact the situation is very complicated.

Our authorities, along with the border guards, throw dust in the eyes and declare that this will not affect ordinary people. It’s ridiculous.

The situation is that Brest residents bring home appliances from Poland, which have much better quality than the ones offered by our stores. Secondly, Polish goods are generally much cheaper. So, the reduction of limits can hit those who, for example, build houses. After all, heating elements and building materials are brought from Poland. In general, the reduction of limits on the import of goods from abroad is a blow to ordinary people.

Those living in Brest know that authorities are engaged in smuggling themselves. For example, trucks with Polish apples are taken to Belarus, and then they become ours and go further as smuggling. Thus, hundreds of millions of dollars are laundered every year.

By the way, it is simply ridiculous that the authorities believe that Belarusians will immediately run to the stores for domestic goods. People will look for other ways to bring in building materials or household appliances.

Separately, I’ll note that people’s sentiment is as follows: if you don’t want us to buy European equipment there and bring it here, then we will go there, but forever. That is, t the Belarusians can vote with their feet and not just leave for a part-time job in the EU, but for permanent residence. In general, the idea of voting against Lukashenka’s regime with feet is very acute in Brest.

– From January 1, new limits are introduced and the decree on “parasites” begins to operate. Will this fuel the protest mood of the Belarusians?

– It is obvious that the protest mood will only increase. Especially, when the communal prices grow up. It is outrageous that they want to take the last from ordinary people! But if you do not have the money to pay the communal bill, you can be evicted from the housing and they can take away the children!

People think about it and soon there will be not just a social protest, but a real social outburst that will hit Lukashenka’s power.

Just for the record, there is simply no other way out other than to take to the streets to protest.
