The first head of independent Belarus, Stanislau Shushkevich, has commented to Belsat on the recent Russian-Belarusian political events.

“Someone sane cannot babble the nonsense that Lukashenka, who approves of himself as a person who is fighting for independence, burbles. The Belavezha Accords determine that we are an independent state. And we are dependent only on Russia, it is very simple with all the rest. And so we became an independent state, with the CIS coordinating center in our country, in Minsk, and the first thing that Lukashenka did – he delivered this center, because the economic committee was moved to Moscow. The eastern neighbor was made the big brother again. Give me Lukashenka’s initiatives, aimed at the realization of independence? This is just hypocrisy. No step towards independence has been taken. [...]

The “union state” is the seats for those idlers who do not know how to do anything, who want to rule though they don’t know how to do it. By the way, Lukashenka is just like that. He believes that cadres are all-important. The law must be respected! Even that poor law of Belarus. And then Rumas, I think a very decent premier. But he cannot make a decision, because he needs Lukashenka to support it. But Lukashenka is guided not by the law, but by his own wishes...”
