Mass repressions started in Belarus when the Bolsheviks came to power – in 1917. And ended when Stalin died – in 1953. Researchers believe that at least 600 thousand people came to harm. According to other estimates, this figure reaches 1.4 million. But the exact figures are unknown – the KGB has not yet opened the archives. Belarusians are regarded as the third by the number of victims of repression in Stalin's times.
