Żurawski Vel Grajewski: Blocking Of Charter’97 Increases Threat Of Russian Aggression Against Belarus
PRZEMYSLAW ŻURAWSKI VEL GRAJEWSKI

Blocking a big independent website by the Belarusian authorities rings the alarm bell for the West.

Member of the program council of the ruling Polish party Prawo i Sprawiedliwošč, member of the National Council of Development under the aegis of the President of Poland, Advisor to Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Professor Przemyslaw Żurawski vel Grajewski said this, commenting upon the blockage of the Belarusian independent website Charter97.org:

– No one was surprised by such behaviour of the Belarusian authorities – they used similar methods before. It’s hard to call this situation unusual. We can express our sympathy and concern, but I cannot say I was surprised in any way. I don’t know the reasons why they blocked the site but they are of secondary importance in any case. Sooner or later, under real or made-up reasons, the Lukashenka regime would take this step.

This is an alarming situation indeed. It seemed that, after Russia unleashed aggression against Ukraine in 2014, there was certain concern among the Belarusian authorities with regard to the Russian expansionist policy, as Belarus could have become the victim thereof, regardless of its form of governing. The dictatorship in some way changed its course in order not to turn into a Russian province, there was a concession with regard to the national idea and self-identification, the Russification policy was eased a little.

However, getting rid of such tool as Charter97.org, which was an informational and mental counterbalance to Russia, reveals the change of the political course of the Belarusian authorities, which is a very alarming signal for all of us.

– Belarus is heavily integrated into a military alliance with Russia. The most vivid example of the military cooperation is the exercise West-2017. Can the changes in the information field be a threat to the entire region?

– I think so. The fate of Belarus, the level of Russia's influence on the official Minsk – all this affects the region and all neighboring countries of Belarus. Of course, the direct consequences of the West-2017 exercises play a little more important role. In the 21st century it is impossible to cut people off from information, everyone has access to the Internet.

Nevertheless, if the Kremlin decides that it needs another victory, then the next victim of such an action, which would be considered a “successful military campaign” would be Belarus.

The reduction in the possibility of even an ideological confrontation of Belarusians to this pressure only brings Russia closer to the possibility of such a decision.

I would not say that this is an immediate signal for active action, but the blocking of Charter97.org is a step towards increasing the threat of the Russian aggression against Belarus. Such aggression can be the result of internal political processes in Russia, the creation of the image of Putin as a “collector of Russian lands.” The situation is moving in this direction.

Important to note, on January 24 the Lukashenka regime blocked the independent informational resource Charter97.org. First Deputy Minister of Information Ihar Lutski confirmed the fact of blocking.

The blocking is possible to overcome, and here are the instructions on how to do it:
