"People Must Decide Where And How Celebrate Freedom Day"

The peaceful demonstration on March 25 is to take place in the center of Minsk.

The country authorities must listen to the demands of opposition leaders and allow the mass rally on Freedom Day in the format specified in the application of the National Organizing Committee for the celebration of the centenary of the proclamation of the BPR. This opinion was expressed by BNC activist from Minsk Valiantsin Trokski to the press service of the Belarusian National Congress:

– March 25 is a great national holiday. 100 years ago a group of patriots made an attempt to create the Belarusian People's Republic in order to gain true freedom and independence for the country under the white-red-white flag and the coat of arms Pahonia. That is why these two attributes of statehood are the real symbols of free Belarus. For me, they are also valuable because their roots lie in the depths of the glorious history of our state, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the memory of which the invaders and their local puppets and servants have been trying to erase for over 200 years.

– You take part in the work of the National Organizing Committee for the celebration of the centenary of the proclamation of the Belarusian People's Republic. Various formats of the Freedom Day celebration have been discussed there. Why has a demonstration and a rally in the center of Minsk been chosen?

– By participating in the mass march along the main avenue of the capital, we will show our commitment to the ideals of an independent state to the rest of Belarusians and to the whole world. We will show that we remember the sacrifices incurred by our people in the name of freedom. We will show that we honor the memory of our glorious ancestors, that we are worthy of them and wish "to be called people". There is simply no other effective way of expressing our rights and hopes, except for a mass rally.

In Minsk, the holiday must be held in the center of the capital. The procession must pass along the route chosen by the organizing committee members. Freedom Day is a national holiday. The people, under the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus, are the only source of power. And it is up to the people to decide where and how to celebrate such a significant event in our history.

– Nevertheless, the National Organizing Committee announced its readiness to hold negotiations with the authorities ...

– It’s a wise decision to appeal to the authorities with a proposal to celebrate together the centenary of the restoration of independence. In the conditions of our absurd reality, this is a real opportunity to prevent them from spoiling the holiday with idiotic prohibitions and restrictions based on the authorities’ paranoid phobia of the people, as it was, for example, last year. After all, the authorities have remembered the independence not once recently. Let's see if they are ready to back their statements with real actions.
