Why has Russia started a "dairy war" with Belarus?

Russia bans the import of milk and dairy products from Belarus since February 26. Economist Leanid Zaika, the head of the analytical center Strategy, has commented on the Rosselkhoznadzor's decision to Charter97.org:

– This event stroke a chord with "milk front" Komsomol members – they say, the decision is political. There is talk about a "milk war" and a "political show."

However, Putin does not need such a "show," given that there are presidential elections in Russia in two weeks. Moreover – it goes ill with him. Providing that it was done by Sobchak, Grudinin or someone else – such a "version" could be discussed. But it looks stupid anyway.

When you get down to it, the ban is applicable to what comes from Belarus as raw materials for Russian dairy enterprises. And this just closely echoes Grudinin’s recent speech, where he said that the "successes" of the Russian dairy production had been made due to the African palm oil and the milk powder from Belarus. That is, Russia wants to cross over to its own raw materials.

As for the ready-made, packaged and bottled products from Belarus, there is no need to ban them: they are not "there". If to compare with how it was 5-10 years ago, Belarusian products almost disappeared from Russia's trade networks. Therefore, we do not need to sound an alarm, let's drink our milk ourselves.

This should have happened long ago. In general, if we do not play the fool and do not listen to the speeches of our idiots running about under the government, it is clear that the development of the EEU market leads to a decrease in the share of Belarus in it. Soon, only highly competitive Belarusian producers will stay there, and they are not a dime a dozen.

I do not know who built castles in the air and wanted to flood Russia with meat and milk, but nothing of the kind could happen. There’s a very strong association of dairy producers in Russia. It will crush any mosquito, even if it is Belarusian. It will force us to sell our enterprises. As a result, the Belarusian diary production will surrender and go into captivity.

So this is not a " dairy war." This is the result of the development of a common dairy market. And Russia is very firm in positioning itself on it as a dominant producer. And while Minsk is whining everything will be over. We will drink milk ourselves.

– But the representative of Belarus in the Eurasian Economic Commission Siarhei Sidorski has already "throwт himself on a pill box" and declared the decision of Russia illegal...

– Sidorski! An expert on locomotives... And what he, as a representative from Belarus, can say? Does he want Lukashenko to throw him out of the ECE? He is there to protect his master. He should have said more. He had to come up with the idea that we sent milk samples to Vienna, to Sweden and now we demand international quality control.

Moreover, taking into account the Olympic Games, Sidorski must say: it reminds WADA actions and the "fight" against the Russian Olympians. To accuse the Russians that they are looking for Meldonium in Belarusian milk. To declare Belarusian milk the best in the world. To call Lukashenka and ask him to send cans with cream and milk, and give the Russians to them to free of charge on Red Square.

What is there to say, what to call for? Provide the results of biochemical analysis, organic analysis, DNA, micro flora... And it turns out: Vasia said, Petia responded.

– This means the Belarusian agribusiness, which already survives only due to subsidies, will face even more severe times?

– It is already falling apart under the blow of Russian producers. Belarusian products disappear from the ECE market.

And what did you expect? Only official channels rattle about our achievements. I understand that it's easier to talk about space flights and the Bolshoi Theater. Now let them enjoy the Bolshoi Theater: the strong one will eat the weak. Farms in Russia are very powerful and large. Due to this, about 40 percent of Belarusian farms will be simply ruined, and another 30-40 percent will go to the hands of Russian producers.

As an economist, I do not see any disharmony. This is what happens if you start to make a common market space. I once warned the "integrators" about this. Guys, you said that you didn't care? Well, now blow on the milk!

– But Lukashenka has repeatedly stated that he would "raise the village." How can he tackle this issue now?

– And he has nothing left to do! Unless he says: "These are scoundrels from the East."

If Lukashenka wants, if Kolia tells him, he can start producing milk directly from the grass, bypassing the cow. And call it "the main way". We will produce milk without any cow. Why not pull more of that on the Belarusian people?
