Why Belarusian Enterprises Don't Pay Wages

Organizations were not able to pay their employees a total of Bn 12.8 million.

In Belarus,195 enterprises had debts in wages as of March 1. Most enterprises with the debt in payment of wages are located in the Vitsebsk region, writes tut.by.

If we convert the total amount of debt in the average earnings in the country, it turns out that the enterprises owe about 14,900 wages (the latest data on wages in January - Bn 859).

The Federation of Trade Unions made it clear that in February of this year, 203 organizations have committed violations of labor legislation with regard to payment of wages. "In January the trade unions have been identified 100 such organizations, that is, the number of debtors increased by more than 2 times", - the Federation's representatives added.

For comparison, at the beginning of November last year, 178 organizations had wage arrears, and a year ago - 481 enterprises.

The issue of late payment of wages was considered at a meeting of representatives of the Prosecutor General and the Federation of Trade Unions to discuss the results of the joint work on the implementation of the agreement on cooperation, signed in September 2017.

The management of the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus and the General Prosecutor's Office discussed the results of joint work in the framework of the signed in September 2017 agreement on cooperation.

- One of the basic rights of our citizens - the right to timely payment of wages. This issue is on the special control of the prosecutor's office. Only for the last year, we subjected more than 1.5 thousand officials to the administrative, disciplinary and material responsibility. The solution of this problem defines the improvement of the production efficiency, increase of the people's well-being, establishing a favorable social and psychological climate in the society, - said the head of the Prosecutor General's Office for supervision over the implementation of legislation and legality of law acts Andrei Maltsau.

Most of the enterprises-debtors in wages are in the agricultural and construction sectors, and the most problematic region, according to the Prosecutor General's Office and the Federation of Trade Unions, is the Vitsebsk region.

- We will visit the Vitsebsk region together with the prosecutors in April, to analyze in detail the situation at those companies where the debt is chronic, and try to find possible ways out of this situation - summed up Deputy Chairman of the Federation of Trade Unions Alena Mankevich.
