Lukashenka's Regime Defends Assad

The Belarusian Foreign Ministry condemned attacks on Syria.

Strikes against Syria are fraught with an uncontrolled escalation of the situation, which can lead to inter-state military conflict. The statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus released on Saturday says.

"The Republic of Belarus strongly condemns attacks on the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic on April 14, 2018," the statement points out.

Minsk stated that "the situation in Syria actually turns into an interstate armed conflict, which is fraught with further uncontrolled escalation that goes beyond the region". The Belarusian Foreign Ministry called on all the parties involved "to immediately stop the use of military force against other States and to seek ways to settle conflicts by peaceful means at the negotiating table".

The Foreign Ministry also believes that the use of prohibited weapons of mass destruction should meet response. "However, the response should be based on unambiguous and verified facts and taken in strict conformity with the international law. None of these criteria was met by those who has stroken against Syria today," The Belarusian foreign department said.

Minsk believes that the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons should be able to check the information on the use of chemical weapons in Syria and report on results of the investigation.

"We believe that all members of the UN Security Council should make the utmost efforts to fulfil the tasks for the restoration and maintenance of international peace and security entrusted to them by the international community", the Belarusian Foreign Ministry says.
