Evil Day For Belarusian Internet

The amendments to the law on mass media will be adopted in Belarus today.

On April 19, the so-called "house of representatives" will hear the first reading of new amendments to the law on the media. To be sure, it will be approved without any alterations.

The amendments will finally destroy the freedom of speech in Belarus. The registration of news Internet resources comes into use. The owners and reporters of unregistered Internet resources are not recognized as journalists, do not have the right to receive and protect the source of information, and are equated to demonstrators at mass rallies.

"Compulsory identification of persons posting materials or comments on forums of online resources" comes into use. That is, editors working in Belarus, the Internet media will be forced to submit the data of their journalists and readers, commenting on the article, to the special services. It will be possible to block social networks and restrict access to Internet resources on an out-of-court basis.

Experts call these amendments "a crack-down on independent journalism" and "a new turn of the screw." Aside from this, after the independent Internet resources are destroyed, Belarus will finally fall under the informational influence of Russia.

We remind that on January 24, the largest independent news site, Charter-97, was blocked in Belarus.
