Mikalai Statkevich: We Won Without a Battle

Lukashenka said that there would be no changes in the Constitution of Belarus.

The leader of the Belarusian National Congress Mikalai Statkevich earlier stated that during the address of Lukashenka "to the people and the Parliament" a referendum could be declared, the website of Belsat TV channel writes.

"The BNC warned that we would raise people if a decision on the referendum was made, if Lukashenka took such an adventure. I am very glad that the BNC's warning has worked. I am also grateful to the Armenian people, it is an important factor that the opposition won there yesterday. The Armenians showed how it could be, and it made him abandon his own plans, which were announced by his officials. The authorities have long started to put out feelers, Makei spoke about the referendum even in an interview with Euronews... But today we have won without a battle".

Information about the referendum on amendments to the Constitution has repeatedly appeared in media over the last month. The chairman of the CEC Lidziya Yarmoshyna, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Uladzimir Makei mentioned it. According to Yarmoshyna, the preparation period can take only 70 days, and it will be held "on extra-budgetary means". In his turn, the head of the Belarusian MFA confirmed in an interview to Euronews TV channel that the authorities were contemplating possible changes of the Constitution. Specific issues to be put to the vote have not yet been announced.

It is known that in 2016 the LDP Party proposed to hold a referendum on the extension of the years of presidency - from 5 to 7 years.
