Homel Straight After Accident At Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant: Authorities Are Scuttling, Children Are Marching

The authorities reacted helplessly, senselessly and even criminally.

The events related to the Chernobyl disaster are recalled in Belarus.

The people, who lived in cities and towns affected by the technogenic catastrophe, are sure that the authorities reacted helplessly, senselessly and even criminally, Radio Racyja reports.

Immediately after the accident, May Day demonstrations involving schoolchildren were held in the radiation’s drop out area. Iryna Ivanova who lived in Homel during the Chernobyl accident and immediately after it, recalls: "The Homel party leadership partially have fled, partially have sent their own children as far as possible from the city. At the same time, people were preparing for the May Day holidays, and rehearsals were being held at the square. Schoolchildren were driven there to rehearse the parade."

We remind that the first official announcement about the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident was made only two days after the disaster, on April 28.
