Activists Paid Respect To 1863 Rebel Ihnat Budzilovich

The head of Vorsha rebel squad was shot in Vorsha on August 28, 1863.

Volunteers of the Human Rights Defenders against the Death Penalty campaign with the activists of the Belarusian Language Society commemorated 1863 insurgent Ihnat Budzilovich on the day of his execution on 28 August, Radio Racyja reports.

The head of the Vorsha detachment, Ihnat Budzilovich (1841-1963), was shot in Vorsha on August 28, 1863, on the territory of the Jesuit College, which at that time had already been transformed into a fortress prison.

The head of Viasna’s Vorsha department, Ihar Kazmerchak said: "The situation with the death penalty in Belarus has not changed since the 19th century, when Ihnat Budzilovich was shot. The death penalty still exists in Belarus, people are still shot in Belarus."

The monument is erected near the place, where the rebels’ last fight took place, on the site where used to be the church of St. Nicholas. The cross has been made by an Armenian sculptor, and the stone pedestal has been made by Liozna school children on the initiative of their teacher Alena Hrachyshnikava in 2006. The monument to the rebels already needs renovation.

Traditionally, on August 28, on the day of Ihnat Budzilovich’s execution, people from all over come to the village of Pahostsishcha of Liozna district, where the last battle of Ihnat Budzilovich’s detachment took place. This year, they have been joined by activists of the Human Rights Defenders against the Death Penalty campaign.

This year, people from Vorsha, Liozna, Beshenkovichy and Vitsebsk have come to the place of the rebels’ last battle.

"We were remembering the Budzilovich’s rebels’campaign, – Ihar Kazmerchak says, – and how the only monument to Kalinouski was installed in Eastern Vitsebsk region. The participants decided that one monument is not enough. And agreed to set up a symbolic monument in the village of Litvinava in Dubrouna district, where the headquarters of the uprising in Mahiliou province was situated."
