Yury Belenki: 27 Years Ago Our Belarusian Solidarity Worked Like Charm

On September 19, 1991, the Supreme Council of Belarus of the 12th convocation recognized the white-red-white flag and the coat of arms Pahonia as the state symbols.

27 years ago, on September 19, 1991, the Supreme Council of Belarus of the 12th convocation recognized the white-red-white flag and the coat of arms Pahonia as the state symbols. One of the participants of those events, then deputy and member of the Belarusian Popular Front’s Adradzhenne Yury Belenki told Belsat about that dramatic event of the Belarusian history.

"I will say staright away – it was hard. But then our Belarusian solidarity worked as a charm. We, the deputies of the Supreme Council of the 12th convocation, were the motor of the event. One thing was very important: an exhibition about the history of our national symbols was held. Another important thing was that the president of the National Academy of Sciences, Uladzimir Platonau, spoke in support of the new symbols in the parliament. Such a combination, such a promotion of our national symbols factored in our victory."
