Ales Krautsevich: Kalinowski's Rebels' Secret Code Phrase – “I Love Belarus”
ALES KRAUTSEVICH

Participants in the uprising of 1863-64 thought primarily about the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

Professor, Doctor of Historical Sciences, “deputy” Ihar Marzaliuk published an article in Nastaunitskaya Hazeta, in which he claims that Kastus Kalinowski fought not for the Belarusian, but for the Polish idea, and the uprising itself was purely Polish. Professor, Doctor of Historical Sciences Ales Krautsevich commented on the publication of the Belarusian historian and “deputy” on the air of Belsat channel.

According to Ales Krautsevich, Ihar Marzaliuk hits the foundation of the Belarusian national history.

“What Mr. Marzaliuk writes – some facts, some texts taken out of context. They do not match the studies of real specialists in the 19th century. There's no sense arguing about this. Ihar Marzalyuk’s speech is not of a scientific nature, but of purely ideological one,” – Krautsevich says.

“The participants in the 1863-64 uprising thought first of all about the Grand Duchy of Lithuania – this was the period when the Belarusian national movement was not formed yet,” – Krautsevich reminds. – “Kalinowski laid the foundations of populism, he stands at the origins of the Belarusian national movement. The rebels' secret code phrase was “I love Belarus.” He spoke in the Belarusian language to people, he meant this Belarus. Professor Smalianchuk found in the archives letters of the Kalinowski family, where he was called precisely Konstanty, and not Wincenty.”

According to Ales Krautsevich, Ihar Marzaliuk became a hostage of the state ideology.

“He might like to avoid such statements, but he cannot, because he has to prove that he belongs to them. At home among strangers.”
