Alena Masliukova: Second Stage Of Struggle With Chinese Plant Begins
Alena Masliukova

Svetlahorsk authorities refused 10 times in a row to let the residents of the city to exercise their constitutional rights.

Harmful emissions of methyl mercaptans from the bleached pulp plant, which poison the environment, residents of the city and village Yakimava Slabada, were the reason of protests, the human rights center Viasna writes.

Local activists have applied for holding mass events in the city at a specially established site – the Bumazhnik stadium, but none of them was satisfied. The authorities shamelessly use primitive tricks for refusal: they inform the applicants that another event is scheduled at the stadium at this time.

For example, an application for holding a mass event on September 29 was filed by Anatol Zmitrovich, an activist of the initiative group for controlling the work of the bleached pulp plant.

“At the indicated time – from 4 pm to 6 pm on September 29 – a previously scheduled event will be held at the stadium – the 300 Talents for the Queen republican track and field sports event. In this regard, the district executive committee refuses your application to hold a mass event,” – the deputy chairman of the Svetlahorsk district executive committee, Kanstantsin Piatrouski, wrote.

The authorities responded to the applicants in a similar way on October 6. However, this time, human rights activist Alena Masliukova informed the court that on that day, at the time, for which the activists had submitted an application (at 16.00), nothing was happening at the stadium. In support of her words, Alena Masliukova demonstrated a video and photo from an empty stadium at the trial, which took place on October 16. However, the court simply ignored all the human rights activist’s arguments.

The following refusal was considered by the Svetlahorsk district court on November 12. And this time, the local Themis turned a blind eye to the arbitrariness of the district authorities.

Several activists and human rights activist Alena Masliukova were forced to file a complaint against the court decision with the Homel Regional Court, which scheduled the trial for January 22. A copy of the regional court’s definition on the consideration of the case in the court of appeal was also sent to the Svetlahorsk regional executive committee.

“The second stage of the fight against the decisions of Svetlahorsk district executive committee on refusing to hold the rally at the Bumazhnik stadium on October 6 on the issue of harmful emissions from the ZVTs and violation of people's environmental rights begins,” – Alena Masliukova said on her Facebook page.
