The tomos of autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church opens the way to independence for the Belarusian Orthodox Church.
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has signed the tomos (charter) on the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
A historic event has taken place. It is important not only for Ukraine but also for Belarus, as opens the way to independence for the Belarusian Orthodox Church. And in this regard, (on the eve of the signing of charter) Patriarchal Exarch of all Belarus Metropolitan of Minsk and Zaslauye Pavel said:
“... I must say quite frankly and openly that if it’s a terrible tragedy for Ukraine, the attempt to impose autocephaly, for the Belarusian Orthodox Church – it means death.”
Why does independence, why does freedom mean death? Where is it written? There is nothing of the kind in the Scripture – and it’s strange to hear such things from a priest, if nothing else.
The autocephaly of the Belarusian Orthodox Church scares the appointed Moscow officials (whether priests or ambassadors) as a way to a really independent Belarusian state (not a Moscow region), which we will be able to defend only together with our church. With our Belarusian church, our Belarusian priests and our Belarusian God.
