Journalists Awarded For Covering Protests In Brest

Independent journalists were praised for their loyalty to the profession.

Brest journalists Ales Liauchuk and Milana Khariytonava won the contest "For Faithfulness to the Profession" of the Homel branch of the Belarusian Association of Journalists, Radio Racyja reports.

The jury awarded the diploma to the authors of high-profile materials on the protests against the battery factory, as well as the investigation material on the schemes of Belarusian products supply to the occupied Crimea bypassing the Ukrainian legislation.

Homel journalist Yauhen Merkis, who won the contest "For Faithfulness to the Profession" in 2017 for live broadcasts from the marches of "non-parasites," commented on the awards:

"Undoubtedly, this is an additional encouragement for any journalist, if his work is evaluated, the efforts that often have to be made by journalists in Belarus, especially independent ones, to make the material, the obstacles that have to be faced and overcome. And if all this is somehow stressed, it is very pleasant and gives strength to do something in the future".

Deputy Chairman of the BAJ Barys Haretski notes that the work of the current winners is very noticeable at the national level:

"This year, the theme of the battery factory in Brest unexpectedly, and maybe even expectedly, sounds. Milana and Ales have been punished with a huge number of fines, so I think it's very important to award this prize to them. It is just because today they are known in Belarus as the most persecuted journalists for cooperation with foreign media this year," - he said.

The contest "For Faithfulness to the Profession" of the Homel branch of BAJ was founded in 2009 in memory of publisher and journalist Uladzimir Verbovikau. Each year the diploma is awarded to journalists of independent mass media who, despite the obstacles, cover high-profile topics.
