The Lithuanian side was able to create the necessary infrastructure.

This week, the US Army's battalion arrived in Lithuania. It is deployed in Lithuania to carry out exercises with Lithuanian and allied forces. The battalion consists of over 500 soldiers, 30 Abrams tanks, more than 20 infantry battle machines “Bradley”, and other types of military vehicles. The battalion, together with the military equipment, will be located at the firing ground named after General Žukauskas in Pabradė - about 10 km away from the Belarusian border.

Spokesman for the Ministry of Defense of Lithuania Tomas Balkus told the Charter97.org portal that Lithuania will provide full support to the battalion arrived - the Lithuanian side will provide accommodation, logistics and access to infrastructure.

The Ministry of Defense said that US forces remain a serious deterrent factor that are contributing to the NATO effort in the Baltic region. US Army soldiers will remain in Lithuania until the spring of 2020. Lithuanian Defense Minister said that this was made possible thanks to Lithuania’s investments in the logistics of the armed forces.

On October 15, president of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda said at a press conference that the goal of Lithuania was to achieve a permanent US military presence. Nauseda cited Poland as an example, which managed to achieve the presence of troops from the United States on a permanent basis.

Earlier, the US military participated in the exercises in Lithuania, but did not stay for a long term.

Since 2017, an international NATO battalion has been deployed in Lithuania. The decision to deploy international battalions was adopted at the NATO Summit in Warsaw in the summer of 2016. Deploying NATO battalion in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland became the Alliance's response to the aggressive actions of Russia in Ukraine, as well as the demonstration of a military power in the region.
