Arseniy Chyhir: Where Did Money Raised By People For Hospital Repair Go?

The Babruisk authorities are trying to make some money at the expense of children's health.

The money to repair the children's hospital is taken from common citizens, but it is not clear where these funds go to.

This is what Arseniy Chyhir, an activist of the European Belarus civil campaign from Babruisk, told Charter97.org.

- The authorities have recently reported that the renovated and repaired children's hospital will be commissioned by 2020, - he said. - But I just recently passed by and saw that the work was still going on, there were cranes. Not only will the repair not be finished in time, but most of the work is not done. If the building is to be ready by 2020, at least they should have finished with the facade. It is clear that they need to report before the "presidential elections". They will bring up the press, will talk about "how the state takes care of children" and all in that style, as they love it. This will be an occasion to earn political points. But it will be another slipshod work.

Together with other activists I have been dealing with this issue for a long time. We talked to experts who said that the cosmetic repairs are not the most important thing that the children's hospital needs. The most important problem is the outdated equipment. It needs to be changed, and it costs a lot of money. The authorities like to remind once again that they have allocated funds for repair and reconstruction from the town and regional budgets. But why, in this case, do they ask for the money to repair the hospital from common citizens? Where do they go? Many people do sink money, but no one is sure that these funds are really used for the needs of the hospital.
