Today, at 5:40 am, police officers and employees of the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and Corruption of the Internal Affairs Ministry searched the apartment belonging to Artsiom Charniak, an activist of the civil campaign European Belarus. The search lasted about two hours as part of the criminal case initiated under the article “Storage of firearms.”

Nothing was found during the search, however, the police officers detained Artsiom Charniak, having previously taken away his phone. The European Belarus activist was brought to Minsk to the office of the State Committee for Prevention of Emergency Situations and interrogated.

The interrogation lasted about an hour. Charniak told Charter97.org what questions the Interior Ministry officials asked him: whether he kept or distributed firearms, whether he was connected with people who do it, if he knows anything about “black diggers,” what he does in his free time. After the interrogation, they released Artsiom Charniak; his status in the criminal case is unknown.

Coordinator of the civil campaign European Belarus Yauhen Afnahel commented on the situation to Charter97.org website:

“Over the past two months after Lukashenka announced the beginning of a “political mayhem” in connection with the upcoming elections, a provocation was committed against me, Maksim Viniarski was interrogated in a criminal case, other activists were threatened. Obviously, Lukashenka fears the upcoming elections and is trying to overpower active protesters. In addition, the authorities are very much afraid of popular protests against the new version of the “parasite” decree. Therefore, they use any provocation. All these provocations, interrogations and criminal cases are just a cover-up and are all falsified. One of the reasons for them to exist – Lukashenka’s impunity, he perceives lack of reaction in the West to repressions in Belarus as a blank check. Let me remind you that one of the leaders of the Belarusian illegitimate parliament, Mikhail Miasnikovich, is in Poland right now.

But all this will not help Lukashenka, because many new leaders have appeared in Belarus, and protests have long been spontaneous.”
