Pensioner In Ivianets Sells Gun To Buy Himself Coffin, Goes Under Trial

A Russian bought a gun from an 81-year-old Belarusian.

On February 5, the Prosecutor’s Office of the Valozhyn District filed a criminal case over charges of an 81-year-old resident of Ivianets of the illegal sale of a hunting rifle, to the court.

The pensioner sold his registered 16-caliber IL-58 smooth-bore gun to prepare for death. The old man bought himself shoes and a coffin for that.

The prosecutor of the Valozhyn District Yury Kanapatski told mlyn.by:

- The defendant is a hunter. He lives in Ivianets with his wife. His gun was registered, he kept it legally, but he sold it, breaking the law. The pensioner explained during the preliminary investigation that on November 25, 2018, a Russian from the Smolensk region asked in the market where he could buy a hunting rifle. The old man offered to sell him his own. Then he said: “Of what use is it to me? It’s just lying there getting rusty.”

According to Yury Kanapatski, the Russian paid 200 rubles for this gun. The pensioner bought from him a pair of shoes for 30 rubles, and in the store - a coffin and two crosses.

The pensioner is charged under Part 2 of Article 295-1 of the Criminal Code of Belarus (Illegal sale of hunting smooth-bore firearms).

The offense is punishable by fine or correctional labor for up to two years, or arrest, or imprisonment for up to two years.
