Thomas Tamilinas: Kalinouski Belongs To Pantheon Of Main National Heroes Of Belarus

The inscription in Belarusian will appear on the monument to the rebels of Kalinouski in Vilnius.

This information has been confirmed to the deputy of the Lithuanian Seimas Tomas Tamilinas by the Minister of Culture of Lithuania Mindaugas Kvietkauskas.

“There will be a place for the Belarusian language, along with the Polish and Lithuanian. Since one of the most famous participants in the uprising, Kalinouski, is included in the pantheon of the main national heroes of Belarus, the Belarusians’ concern about this is understandable. In Lithuania, a lot is being done to strengthen the Belarusian identity, to popularize the Belarusian language, as well as to spread the ideas of democracy and human rights in Belarus,” – Thomas Tamilinas wrote on Facebook.

In the comment to belsat.eu, the politician also noted that the appearance of the Belarusian language at the monument was not a problem for official Vilnius.

“For the Lithuanian side, it was not a problem to make an inscription in Belarusian. The Minister of Culture learned from me about the problem, because I have constant contacts with Belarus and a lot of people have written to me and addressed me privately.

Therefore, not to include the Belarusian language was not a political decision, but a technical one. When he learned that Belarusians are worried, he immediately said that such an inscription would be made. Although the Belarusian authorities did not officially speak out and were not interested in this.”
