Lithuanian President called the Prime Minister's proposal anti-Constitutional.
On March 17, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite said that Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis's proposal on the Belarusian nuclear power plant is anti-Constitutional, Delfi reports.
“The Constitution provides that decisions are made only by the president, and foreign policy is carried out jointly with the government,” – Grybauskaite said, noting that the Prime Minister did not get his proposal approved by the government.
“So, since this topic was not discussed, and this is a strategic foreign policy goal, I think this is an anti-Constitutional action,” – Lithuanian President believes.
Lithuania has repeatedly opposed the construction of the Astravets NPP. In 2017, Lithuania adopted a law recognizing the Belarusian NPP as a threat to national security.
As the website Charter97.org reported, Lithuanian Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis proposed to the Belarusian authorities to transform the Astravets NPP to a gas-fired heat and power plant.
