Why did the authorities start apologizing?

Recently, the authorities have not been above apologizing. Political analyst Valeryj Karbalevich has expressed an idea to Radio Svaboda that it may be connected with the upcoming presidential elections.

- The elections are a crisis of legitimacy. Lukashenka understands it well. There is experience of other countries, when on the eve of the elections it seemed that everything was predetermined, and then elections brought unpleasant surprise to the authorities.

I remember the Soviet times, when the elections were a strange ritual. But the entire state apparatus bent over backwards during the elections. You may ask why, there was no opposition at all in the country. Elections are an important thing for any state, even for those that are far from being democratic.

Perhaps, Lukashenka has the data of sociological polls, according to which the trust in the authorities has dropped significantly.

I talked to people who were taking part in the local "elections" last year and were going around the apartments, collecting signatures and agitating. According to them, it was very difficult to meet a resident who would have a positive attitude to Lukashenka's policy.

He knows it, understands it and tries to compensate somehow. And then, the relations with Russia are also bad. And what if the Russian aid crumbles. And what if Russia attempts to play a game in the elections, supporting another candidate or at least putting pressure on Lukashenka, as it was in 2010, when the series "The Godfather" was shown on NTV. There is a certain tension.
