Hrodna Resident Sets Up Tent In Front Of District Administration And Is Going To Live There

Aliaksandr Laurentsiyeu seeks to draw attention to the problem of housing shortage.

Hrodna activist Aliaksandr Laurentsiyeu carried out a symbolic action: he put up a tent in front of the building of Kastrychnitski district administration in Hrodna. Thus, he wanted to draw attention to the problem of lack of housing and large queues for it, hrodna.life writes. An hour later, the head of the administration, Aleh Bialinski, came out and offered to discuss his application once again.

- I will live here soon, because I have no place at home. My apartment is 34.5 square meters, and five people are living there. Now my youngest daughter is about to go to school, and I will have to nail her desk to the ceiling. The administration just sends me refusals (for rented housing - ed.). I propose to give out such tents to everyone - it has a reasonable price, is affordable, it is possible to live in it. At least in summer, you can tide over, - Aliaksandr says. He is sure that 30% of the country's population has such a problem.

Aliaksandr is a pastry chef by profession. He has a wife and two children - a daughter of five and a son of three. Now they live with Aliaksandr's mother in Fabrychny. Five people share 34.5 squares. Aliaksandr is afraid that social services may see the conditions in which the children live, and the family will have problems. In addition, conflicts have already started in the family because of the lack of privacy.

Aliaksandr has been in a waiting list to improve housing conditions since November 2013. He wants to get rental housing. He claims the apartments of less than 60 square meters to stay in the waiting list and cope financially. So far, all applications have been refused. The authorities also offer to get a job at a state-owned enterprise with a dormitory, but with a salary of about 300 rubles. Aliaksandr appealed even to the Lukashenka commission, as it turned out, that there was not enough income for every family member. They were sent to the city executive committee, from which there's no answer yet.

Aliaksandr has been unemployed for a week now. Prior to that, he worked at LLC Arkhifud. He says he earned about 650 rubles. With holidays and festival days it was more. In addition to his main job, he worked part-time at a construction site. His wife works as a cook in the Karona shopping center. Both spouses cannot get housing from their place of work. It's expensive to rent, Aliaksandr says.

- It's a gesture of a man who simply can't see a way out of the situation. Before we put up the tent, we went to the administration and asked what to do in the situation and whether it was possible to get housing. They made up some paperwork and gave us to sign it - wait, hope," said Nikolai Solyanik, representative of the Belarusian National Congress in Hrodna. Nikolai sees a solution to the problem in the redistribution of the state budget.

Ten minutes after Aliaksandr set up the tent, the employees of the Department of Security, who were called by the administration, came. They noted down Aliaksandr Laurentsiyeu and Mikalai Salianik's personal data. But they did not see any violations in the actions of the activists. Half an hour later, a district police officer and a policeman arrived. They also checked all the documents and did not see any violations.

An hour later, the head of the administration, Aleh Bialinski, came out of the administration. He asked to remove the tent in order not to "destroy the lawn," which belongs to the organization. And he suggested to consider once again the possible options for housing.

Aliaksandr was offered to write an application for a three-room apartment with partial facilities at 8-2 Kalinin side street 3. It is a one-storey apartment building of 1969. It is located in the area of Paliastsina, where the 14th bus is available. The conditions can be improved by themselves and the conveniences can be installed in the house. Sometimes there are no applications for such apartments at all, so the chances of getting such a place are high.

Aliaksandr looked at the apartment and decided that the family had no money to do the repairing. For now, they are considering other options.
