Photo Fact: Memorial Shield Dedicated To Victory in Vorhsa Battle Installed In Rivne

The shield has been embedded in the wall in the place, where, according to historians, Astrožskaya Brama once was located.

In the town of Rivne, a regional center in Ukraine, in the pedestrian area of Soborna Street, a memorial shield was placed honouring the 505th anniversary of the victory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania near Vorsha, Radio Svaboda reports.

The shield has been embedded in the wall in the place, where, according to historians, Astrožskaya Brama once was located, through which Prince Kanstancin Astrožski entered the town of Rivne.

The shield bears the following inscription: “08.09.1514. Victory of Prince K.Astrožski in the battle near Vorsha”.

The idea to celebrate the anniversary of the victory in the Vorsha battle was first brought in by the local civil organization “Glory of the Astrožski Princes”, and supported by the local authorities.

“It is necessary that our youth should be brought up on something positive, something they can be proud of. This is a “roadblock” in a certain sense, as it is important everyone should know that there was this battle, we won it, and probably it’s not the last victory,” said Mayor of Rivne Volodymyr Khamko at the opening ceremony.

Simultaneously, a crowdfunding campaign started in Rivne to raise money for the restoration of the painting by Polish artist Jósef Męcina-Krszesz “Battle of Vorsha”, dated XIX century. For this, they created a special photo zone in the mall, where it is possible to take a photo with the replicate of the famous artwork, and donate money for it’s restoration.

In Ukraine, they have started active popularization of the name of Prince Kanstancin Astrožski since 2014 - the 30th Separate Novohrad-Volyn Rivne Mechanized Brigade and joint Ukrainian-Lithuanian-Polish Military Brigade have been named after him.

In October 2014, the National Bank of Ukraine issued a coin in honour of the 500th anniversary of the Vorsha Battle, in which the troops of the Muscovite State were defeated by the warriors of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
