Lithuanian Foreign Minister Reminded New Ambassador Of Belarus About Human Rights And BelNPP
LINAS LINKEVIČIUS

Linas Linkevičius has met with Valeryj Baranouski in Vilnius.

Linas Linkevičius stressed the need for cooperation with international experts and implementation of the recommendations of the European Union (EU) on stress tests and other security issues before the launch of the power plant, the press release of the Ministry reads.

"Nuclear safety and the problem of Astravets NPP are among the main issues on our bilateral and the international agenda of Lithuania," - the Lithuanian minister said.

According to him, not only the implementation of international obligations in the field of nuclear safety, but also real progress in the field of human rights will have a significant impact on the development of further relations between Belarus and the EU.

"Lithuania and Belarus are neighbors, and all issues are important for us. As before, we will be pragmatic and support those projects or initiatives that will be beneficial both for the EU and our bilateral relations," - Linkevičius said.

The government of Lithuania says that the Belarusian nuclear power plant in Astravets, located just 50 kilometers from Vilnius, is not built in compliance with safety and environmental standards. Minsk denies such accusations.

The first unit of the power plant is supposed to be launched at the end of this year, and the second unit - in 2020.

During the meeting with Ambassador of Belarus, Linkevičius also discussed opportunities for further development of economic, transport, educational, cultural and other cooperation between the countries.

"Lithuania is interested in increasing the number of tourists from Belarus and simplifying the visa regime between the European Union and Belarus," - the Minister said.

Baranouski presented his credentials to President of Lithuania Gitanas Nauseda on August 28 this year.
