United Kingdom Imposes Sanctions Against Belarus

United Kingdom Imposes Sanctions Against Belarus

Sanctions are introduced partly because of the disappeared opponents of Lukashenka.

Great Britain is introducing sanctions against Belarus in connection with its withdrawal from the EU, the government website informs.

The government notes that the UK is imposing its sanctions against Belarus, as the country withdraws from the EU, which has repeatedly imposed restrictive measures against Belarus.

The government reports that the sanctions are designed to encourage the Belarusian authorities:

to respect democratic principles and institutions, as well as the separation of powers and the rule of law in Belarus;

to refrain from actions that oppress civil society in Belarus;

to investigate properly and initiate criminal proceedings against those responsible for the disappearances of Yury Zaharanka, Viktar Hanchar, Anatol Krasouski and Dmitry Zavadski;

to observe international law in relation to human rights and respect human rights.

Now, after the suspension of the EU sanctions in 2016, Belarus is subject to an arms embargo (restrictive measures include an embargo on arms and means that can be used for internal repression) and personal sanctions against four people, considered by the EU to be involved in the disappearances of opposition politicians in 1999-2000. Since 2004, Uladzimir Naumau (former Interior Minister), Viktar Sheiman (former head of Lukashenka's administration), Yury Sivakou (head of the Interior Ministry during the disappearance of politicians) and Dzmitry Paulichenka (commander of the Interior Ministry special forces brigade) have been under sanctions. They are forbidden to enter the EU and their assets are frozen in the EU territory.
