Lukashenka Appoints New Heads At General Staff, Defense Ministry, Security Council

The dictator has explained these appointments with “coming through difficult times”.

Lukashenka has appointed the new Defense Minister and Head of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Belarus.

According to the state news agency BelTA, Major-General Viktar Khrenin, who led the troops of the Western Operational Command, has been appointed Belarus' Defense Minister. Major-General Aliaksandr Valfovich, who previously served as First Deputy Head of the General Staff, has been appointed Chief of the General Staff. Former Defense Minister Andrei Raukou has been appointed State Secretary of the Security Council.

Viktar Khrenin

Until recently, Major General Viktar Khrenin commanded the troops of the Western Operational Command. In this position, he worked for four and a half years.

The new Minister of Defense is 48 years old, he was born in the city of Navahradak, Hrodna region.

In 1988, he graduated from the Ussuriysk Suvorov Military School in Russia. And in 1992, the Omsk Higher Combined Arms Command School named after Frunze.

He served as commander of a motorized rifle platoon, reconnaissance platoon, reconnaissance company, head of the information processing center at the command post of a separate reconnaissance battalion. Then he worked as a deputy commander in a separate motorized rifle battalion, and a separate reconnaissance battalion. Later, he led a separate tank battalion, a separate guards motorized rifle battalion of the 6th separate guards mechanized brigade of the Western Operational Command.

In 2005, Khrenin graduated from the Military Academy of Belarus. After that, he served as senior officer in the operational department of the headquarters of the Western Operational Command, deputy commander, chief of staff - first deputy commander of the 6th separate guard mechanized brigade of the Western Operational Command, chief of staff - first deputy commander of the 11th separate guard mechanized brigade of the Western Operational Command, senior officer of the department of the chief the control of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, commander of the 6th separate guards mechanized brigade Western Operational Command, commander of the 11th separate guards mechanized brigade of the Western Operational Command, and Deputy Commander of the Western Operational Command.

From July 2014 to June 2015, Viktar Khrenin was the chief of staff and first deputy commander of the troops of the Western Operational Command. From June 2015 to the present, he commanded all Western Operational Command troops.

Andrei Raukou

Andrei Raukou was appointed Defense Minister in November 2014. Before this, he was a commander of an independent mobile brigade, a chief of operations section-deputy chief of staff of the Western Operational Command, a chief of staff-first deputy commander of the North-Western Operational Command, and a Commander of the North-Western Operational Command.

Andrei Raukou was born in the village of Revyaki, Beshankovichy District, Vitsebsk region in 1967. He finished Minsk Suvorov Military School in 1984 and graduated from Moscow Higher Combined Arms Command School in 1988. In 1999 he graduated from the Command and General Staff Faculty of the Military Academy of the Republic of Belarus and in 2005 he graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. Raukou was even “elected” as “deputy” of the Minsk Regional Council of Deputies from Barysau in 2012.

Aliaksandr Valfovich

Aliaksandr Valfovich was born in 1967 in Kazan. He graduated from the Moscow Military Combined Arms Command School, the command and staff faculty of the Military Academy of Belarus, and the Military Academy of the General Staff of Russia. He has served in Belarus since 1993.
