Malfunctioning Special Services
Iryna Khalip

They need to be scraped for recycling.

Belarusian special services and other local law enforcers have two aggregate states: either irrepressible verbal diarrhoea or pompous silence with a slight winking "I know you know what I know". In both cases, they look pretty stupid but have never learned anything in-between. Don't they think we're the same?

All week long, the whole country's been discussing the "sugar case." All this time the law enforcers pretend that nothing has happened. Even children in schools are already discussing a new potentially scandalous case. The special services keep silence. Belavia is silent as well, although the divert of the plane, which almost reached the destination. The divert of the plane is an emergency. Given that there are no other airlines in our country, it's a state of emergency, so Belavia was obliged to explain itself. However, there were no press releases, no public apologies to passengers who spent a day on a flight instead of a couple of hours. Even the pilot, when several people were taken off the plane, informed that "the technical fault is fixed". Indeed, the Belarusian special services are technically broken.

What did they expect keeping mum? Did they expect that there wouldn't be a single passenger who would write about it on social networks or tell a journalist? That no one would call a friend or relative when landing in Hrodna to tell them about an unexpected adventure? That no one would update their status on Facebook? If they thought like that, then they are not just technically broken, but defective.

What did they expect to happen in a small town with sugar mills? Everyone knows each other in Haradzeya, and news spreads there faster than viral videos get their millions of views. If the mill or the director's house are searched, everyone will learn about it in five minutes. Yes, journalists will not be allowed to the reception, they will say that the director is on vacation. But it has already been discussed. Every Haradzeya citizen will have a friend, brother or matchmaker in the big city. Should one close Haradzeya like Wuhan? No, the defective creatures didn't think about it. They decided that a hundred kilometres to Minsk is too much, and the news will not reach the capital. It will get tired and starve to death on the way.

But when law enforcers switch to another state of aggregate and come up with tall tales, nothing can make them shut up. Remember how they told us about a dead rat in the water supply system, which was to poison the entire city of Minsk by the command of the opposition? Or camps in Poland, where the Belarusian militants train, learning how to assault Drazdy? What about a unique explosive device called "kitty," having no analogues in the world. We have not only designed it but also detonated on July 3? What about Vlad Kovalev, who wanted to destabilize the situation? What about the terrible plot to seize power in December 2010? What about the White Legion fighters who intended to hold an armed coup on March 25, 2017? It's not just a technical fault anymore, it's a defect that even a manufacturer cannot fix. The only way to fix it is to sell it for scrap for further full utilization.

As for the "sugar case", for me, it symbolizes another, major and sad sign of our times. I remember that 20-25 years ago, if the director of an enterprise did not appear at work without notice, did not answer the calls and in general disappeared, there were only two versions: either he went on a bender, or he left for a resort with his mistress. If it was not the director who disappeared, but a ranker, the version was one: one did not recover yet. Today the situation is different. If one does not appear at work and does not answer the phone, it means that one was arrested. If earlier mothers of young people who didn't come home called hospitals and mortuaries, today they call detention facilities. It was a bad time. It is great that it is about to end. It will be a huge and meaningless bunch of scrap with a cast iron moron in the middle.
