Alena Leuchanka: They Can Never Kill the Spirit and Strength of the Belarusian People
Alena Leuchanka

We have passed the point of no return.

Basketball player Alena Leuchanka, who was imprisoned in Akrestsina Street for 15 days for participating in an unauthorized event, today became a guest of a live broadcast on the Free Association of Athletes' Instagram. She talked about how she mentally coped with the detention and what she thinks about her colleagues who have not yet expressed themselves about the situation in the country, tut.by reports.

The basketball player thanked the Belarusians for the support and admitted that she did not expect to see so many messages after her release.

- I think I have thousands of new messages with words of support. To the extent that people write: come to us for a free manicure-pedicure, bring your mother, come to our estate, ask for any help. I am happy to know that there are such people. And I want them to know: I will read every message and every comment and, if possible, try to answer everyone.

When I go to the city now, I feel support everywhere. People look at me in the bank, from nearby cars, in the pharmacy. We greet some of them and have a very nice conversation. This gives me confidence that I am not alone, I am supported by a huge number of people, and gives me the awareness: we are moving in the right direction.

Alena Leuchanka noted that now she feels fine.

- I have friends and family next to me. Wherever I go, people support me. But I do not exclude the possibility that I may need the help of psychologists. I'm not ashamed of that.

The hardest thing today is to realize that there, in the cell, in those conditions, there are still people with whom we spent time together. I am very worried about this. In a very short time, the girls with whom I shared the cell became not just girls, but close people; our views united us very much.

The athlete also shared her opinion on the silence of eminent colleagues.

- In our time, it's hard not to judge. We are all in this emotional state. After the elections, some athletes spoke out against the violence. Yes, there was a time when this was the case. But we have passed the point of no return. And now, perhaps, it is better not to say anything. It looks like the person is just trying to check in.

I believe that every person has a conscience. If these people who are silent are sleeping well today, what can I say? I'm sure everyone knows exactly what's going on. And if they are silent, well, we move on.

Leuchanka told how she spent 15 days of arrest in Akrestsina Street.

- I understood that I was in prison and not in a resort or a sanatorium. But even there, in the cell, I tried to find time for myself, for meditation. I believe in God; this is also important to me. And I will not say that I am so strong. When everyone calmed down and went to bed, it was my time to pray and cry, after which I felt better. It was then that I found balance and tried to fall asleep, although it was hard to call it sleep.

Talking about her future plans, the top basketball player said:

- Now I live for today, enjoy time with loved ones. As for basketball, I have no plans to end my career, although some already call me a former basketball player. But I'm not going to hang my sneakers on a nail yet.

At the end of the broadcast, Alena Leuchanka addressed the Belarusians.

- My dear Belarusians, we can be intimidated; we can be threatened; we can be beaten and imprisoned. But they will never be able to kill the spirit and strength of the Belarusian people. Know that there are many of us, we are together, and we support each other.
