Lithuania Handed Minsk a Note On BelNPP

The note strongly condemns the decision to start production at the power plant.

Today Lithuania handed Minsk a note of protest about its intentions to start electricity production at the Belarusian nuclear power plant in Astravets (BelNPP) in November, Delfi reports.

The note strongly condemns the Belarusian authorities' decision, contrary to calls from Vilnius and the European Union, to start production at the power plant, which Lithuania considers unsafe, the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

According to the Foreign Ministry, Lithuania and the entire European Union call on Belarus to implement the highest safety and environmental protection requirements, as well as the recommendations of the EU stress tests, as soon as possible.

"Lithuania categorically disagrees with such a hasty launch," Presidential Advisor Asta Skaisgirytė told reporters after the meeting of Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda with several ministers.
