The activist was crossing the border at the checkpoint in Yelsk.

At night of October 28-29, border guards detained former political prisoner and activist of anarchist movement Ihar Alinevich when crossing the state border of Belarus.

The parents were informed about the detention by employees of the Yelsk border crossing, spring96.org reports.

According to the mother of the detainee, Valiantsina, they spent a lot of time trying to find out about his next whereabouts and the reasons for the detention. At first they were told that Ihar had been sent to Kalinkavichy, but the local police department did not want to tell them where he was being kept. It only became known yesterday that Ihar Alinevich was allegedly being held in Mazyr.

Ihar's parents know almost nothing about the reasons for his detention, except that the Investigative Committee for Homel region had probably initiated a criminal case in which he was detained.

Ihar Alinevich lived abroad for a long time and hardly ever returned to Belarus, although he was constantly worried about the events that were taking place here.

Ihar Alinevich is a former political prisoner. He was arrested in Moscow on November 28, 2010 and taken to Belarus by unknown persons. He was kept in the KGB remand prison.

On 27 May 2011, the Zavadski District Court of Minsk punished Ihar with 8 years of imprisonment in a reinforced regime colony. He was charged under part 2 of Article 339 of the Criminal Code (hooliganism committed by a group of persons) and parts 2 and 3 of Article 218 of the Criminal Code (damage to property on a large scale). He was later granted a presidential pardon.

In 2013, Ihar Alinevich became the main award winner and the first laureate of the Belarusian PEN Center award named after Frantsishak Aliakhnovich for his book "Going to Magadan". And in 2016, Alinevich became the winner of the National Charter-97 Award for the protection of human rights named after Viktar Ivashkevich for 2015 in the category "For personal courage".
