Frankfurt-On-Oder To Vitsebsk: We Admire Your Courage

The German sister city has sent an open letter to the protesters.

In an open letter, Frankfurt-on-Oder expresses its solidarity with the people of Belarus, who peacefully opposed the falsification of the presidential election in August and for the restoration of democracy, especially with the inhabitants of the sister city of Vitsebsk, the People's News of Vitsebsk reported.

"We admire your courage and enthusiasm. At the same time, we are very concerned that the situation in your city and your country may be subject to escalations. This is because we see that the police and military are using weapons against peaceful demonstrators," - the letter says.

Also, the document says that a month ago a photo exhibition opened in the City Museum of Frankfurt-on-Oder, the exposition of which presents on 29 large stands with thousands of photos the partnership of the two cities: the photos reveal the fact that a lot of people in our cities - young people, retirees, athletes, musicians, dancers, artists have personally met and maintain relations with each other to this day. Two stands demonstrate the photos taken in Vitsebsk in October. We see thousands of people of different ages peacefully protesting against falsified results of the presidential elections in August and for the restoration of democracy.

"We would like you to know that there are many people in our city who are very closely following the developments in your city and your country and want to stay in touch right now. You can count on us in the future, too.

We really hope that you will be able to find your own way and settle your country using peaceful efforts," - such words conclude the open letter.

The appeal is signed by Mayor Rene Wilke, Chairman of the City Council Wolfgang Neumann, Chairman of the Working Group "Vitsebsk" Klaus Baldauf and Head of the Department for Culture, Education, Sports and Civic Participation in Europe Milena Manns.

The document in German was published on the website of the Frankfurt-on-Oder City Administration on December 2. On December 3 this letter was sent by e-mail to the Vitsebsk City Executive Committee.
