Political Scientist: Kremlin Actively Discusses Replacing Lukashenka

The West is also interested in replacing the dictator with a more predictable figure.

Well-known Russian political scientist and journalist Georgy Bovt noted in a comment to BFM that the longer the dispute over oil prices between Moscow and Minsk goes on, the more acute political character it acquires.

The expert stressed that the promises of Belarus to establish reverse and alternative to Russian oil supplies "are still just talks".

"The desire to play the "Belarusian card" against Moscow may be ripening in Western capitals, including Washington, but it won't work quickly anyway, - Bovt suggests. - In addition, we are talking about Lukashenka, who is not very predictable, and who has no credibility in the West. Such a project, if implemented by the West, would require a change of "first person," which would inevitably lead to a new point of conflict with Moscow, which is unlikely to look at it indifferently. It probably already has its own candidates for this post.

The political scientist pointed out that diversification of oil imports for Belarus "will still cost more than the Russian option".

"Lukashenka doesn't have much time. The problems of the Belarusian economy, largely based on cheap Russian energy resources and their re-export to the West at world prices, are growing faster than they are being solved. After all, in the best years, Russian oil cost Belarus at half of world prices," - the expert notes.

In his opinion, the latest actions and statements of the Belarusian ruler have already started to overtax patience at the very top of the Russian authorities.

"The longer Lukashenka outwears Moscow's patience and the more impudent his insults are, the more actively the issue of replacing Aliaksandr with someone more acceptable will be discussed in the appropriate offices," - Bovt summed up.
