The Lithuanian politician about the Astravets NPP.

The first head of independent Lithuania Vytautas Landsbergis said in an interview with svaboda.org that if Belarus wants to be a truly independent state, it should back out of the NPP, which he calls "a completely Kremlin project".

"Belarus is playing a dirty trick. Right at our border. In case of an accident, this border will not stop the radionuclides, they will go in our direction. So we've created this Movement to be heard by Belarusians. This is not an anti-Belarusian movement, we wish prosperity and success to our neighbours. We hope that Belarus will finally wake up and start talking itself," - Landsbergis said.

- said Landsbergis.

On Sunday, the Lithuanian politician took part in the first congress of the Movement against the Belarusian nuclear power plant. It was created by Lithuanian conservatives, liberals and public figures. Belarusian opposition activists Anatol Liabedzka, Dzmitry Kuchuk and Pavel Seviarynets also spoke at the first congress, which was held on Sunday. Svetlana Alexievich addressed the participants by phone. The movement is positioning itself as an organization of a wide range of political forces, which will seek to close the station in Astravets.

"This is a matter of Belarus' freedom. Does it have any right to speak out? It must decide for itself whether it wants to be an independent country or a colony. Let Belarus finally decide whether it is a "green man" or an independent state. It must pronounce itself what it wants. Lukashenka must decide whether he's an independent leader or a subordinate to the "tsar" in Moscow.
