Petras Auštrevičius: We Cannot Recognize Belarusian "Parliament" As Legitimate

Petras Auštrevičius: We Cannot Recognize Belarusian "Parliament" As Legitimate
PETRAS AUŠTREVIČIUS

The MEP has explained why the delegation refused to meet with the "house of representatives".

The delegation of the European Parliament refused to meet with "deputies" of the so-called house of representatives. They reported about it 15 minutes before the meeting. Petras Auštrevičius, one of the European Parliament delegates, told journalists about the reasons for the refusal, Belsat.eu reports.

"The official line of the European Union is the non-recognition of the National Assembly of Belarus. In the absence of elections, which are based on the right and freedom of choice, we can't recognize the Belarusian "parliament" as legitimate. We have reasonable doubts about the elections," - Petras Auštrevičius, Permanent Rapporteur of the European Parliament on Belarus, said.

The visit of the European Parliament delegation is held from February 24 to 28. Meetings with representatives of Belarusian ministries, civil society and opposition parties were held. The MEPs were discussing the issues of amendments to the Belarusian Constitution, domestic violence, human rights, rights to peaceful assembly. An important point of the meetings was the Astravets NPP. According to Auštrevičius, the impressions from the dialogue were different.

"It's one thing to listen to the representatives of the ministries, and another - to human rights activists. Sometimes the information is different, and the answers of the ministries are blurred. It's nice to meet, we learn something, but I can't say that the fog has cleared", - the European Parliament representative stressed.

In addition to Minsk, they will visit Niasvizh and Mir, and will also come to Hrodna. There, the European delegates will meet with Hrodna authorities and students, as well as visit the Kuznitsa - Bruzhi border crossing point.
