The criminal made people hostage to his inadequate mind.

More than 200,000 people in the world have contracted a new type of coronavirus. Governments of the neighbouring countries are taking unprecedented measures to protect their citizens from the pandemic. First, it was made by Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and then the entire European Union have closed their borders and introduced strict quarantine. The "union" Russia also closed its border with Belarus.

Under these circumstances, the Ministry of Education of Belarus cancels the long vacation in schools, while the Ministry of Health publishes obscure reports. Complex calculations show that 51 people in the country were infected with the coronavirus. Lukashenka offers to treat the coronavirus with a tractor, vodka and sauna.

Charter97.org asked the famous Belarusian film director Yury Khashchevatski to comment on such an odd behavior of the authorities amid a dangerous epidemic.

- Quarantine at schools is being introduced all over the world, mass events are being cancelled. At this time, Minsk holds sports competitions and thousands of soldiers rehearse the parade by May 9. How do you explain this?

- It's simple: Lukashenka is concerned that the spread of coronavirus has not been agreed with him. He did not approve this pandemic. Now he is angry. How can it happen without him? Naturally, he must demonstrate his "original" mind, his "developments" on how to treat people. He has already offered to drive a tractor, then drink vodka for people to die unconscious.

Honestly, coronavirus plays in his hands. First, it solves the issue of "pension reform" because the coronavirus mainly contracts the elderly. Hence, it saves much money for government on pension payments.

Second, Lukashenka always has problems with the one who is to be blamed. Whatever stupid things he does in the country, he cannot be blamed but others: bad ministers, weather, the CIA and the Polish Solidarity. Here comes another great reason for our troubles - coronavirus. I can assure you that now he will keep saying that the quarantine all over the world and this coronavirus hurt our beloved Belarus, so again we failed to achieve "$500-salary" and so on.

After all, it's 2020. As far as I understand, by that time we were supposed to earn an average salary of a thousand dollars. Those promises he made 10 years ago. Who's to blame for not having it? Coronavirus.

This is how Lukashenka survives in this world. He lives in his fantasies; the main is that Belarus and the people living here belong to him. The land can be sold to Russia. People can be mocked at as if they are slaves... People do not need protection, according to him. He believes in it and lives like that.

- Yesterday, the Ministry of Health of Belarus issued some obscure message instead of clear figures, claiming only 9 "real patients". Only complex calculations proved that 51 people were infected in the country. How far, in your opinion, will the authorities fall in their lies?

- They have long gone too far. All life in this country is a lie. We live in a lie. I'm not surprised at all. However, many people from the same Ministry of Health, with some professionals there, easily join this system of universal mistruth.

You will not hear a word of truth from the authorities. You can only hear it from non-state media. It is not 100% credible either, because there is a system in the country that does not allow you to check any information.

Let's imagine we decide to find out how many people are contracted and we will go to polyclinics and hospitals. How many of them do you think we can visit? A couple of cars will arrive soon, we will be grabbed and end up in a department being interrogated for a long time.

I am not surprised by Lukashenka (he's behavior is not a surprise for me; it makes no sense to discuss his type), but by people who stand for these mainly criminal ideas. I am angry about teachers who "believe" in election commissions and let chairmen draw fantastic figures, let them slander observers and throw them out of polling stations.

It is not just Lukashenka who creates this corrupted system. It was created by the people themselves. That's the problem. Coronavirus is multiplied by another terrible disease called "Lukashenka". We are to blame for it.

- At the final meeting with the entire Cabinet of Ministers, the dictator talked about milk yield, five-year plans and other figures and never mentioned the problem of coronavirus. Is this a trivial tyranny or paralysis of power, which can no longer separate the husk from the grain?

- I think he did it because he decided to "cancel" this coronavirus. I keep saying he has the brain and logic of a lax, evil child who makes his dreams come true.

When he skis in an empty city, he dreams that everyone in the city has disappeared and he does what he wants.

Now it all happens again. When a child is scared, he closes his eyes and covers himself with a blanket, because there is no danger. Lukashenka does the same and forces others into doing the same.

After a while, the authorities "wake-up" and start chaotically doing some activities. But it will be late. A very difficult situation with this coronavirus awaits us. They are masters in lying. If earlier it sometimes caused just a smile, now it is a crime against many people who can be contracted and fail to live through the epidemic.

- Medicine in quite developed European countries can't cope with the coronavirus pandemic. How can inaction of the authorities end for Belarus?

- It may end in numerous tragedies for ordinary people. For the authorities, it will be a great "relief" for the pension issue. The logic of the authorities is extremely cynical: fewer pensions will have to be paid.

- Belarusians are trying to protect themselves by not letting their children into school. They negotiate with employers about remote work. Can Lukashenka be considered a criminal, who left the country at a critical moment?

- I started to consider him a criminal in 1996 when he illegitimately made a coup. He dissolved the Supreme Soviet of the 13th convocation elected by the people and began to adjust the Constitution to himself. He seized a huge number of rights and used "referendums" in the 2000s to extend his stay in power. What does a criminal usually do? He commits crimes. This is what we are observing.

I will remind you that before Lukashenka a huge number of crimes were committed against the country. He primarily focused the entire economy on Russia. Our sovereignty and independence are questionable now. He sold out it all. For what? For oil discounts. He has either taken money or given some to his entourage. His entourage settled down in Drazdy. They all belong to one criminal gang.

Neglectful attitude to the pandemic, which can end in serious illness and death for many people, is just another crime. There are many things I have not mentioned. Therefore, we should not expect that he will serve the interests of people, rescue and care them in case of a pandemic. It will not happen.

- How can Belarusians neutralize a man who betrayed them in such a desperate time?

- It's very simple. There will be "elections" in August or July, so one should come and vote against him or for a candidate one likes. After that, one should take to the square and streets. Everywhere. In Hrodna, Vitsebsk, Mahiliou and Minsk in the first place, as well as in small towns and villages. They will lack the riot police then. So we have to defend our choice. That's the only way.

- Do you think that the current coronavirus pandemic can become the plot of a movie? What kind of?

- There have been millions of such movies before. They all have not very good endings. Although in Belarus it would have been a satirical one, about our "vertical" and the collective farm power, which was frightened and did not know what to do. In this movie, they would shift the problem. It will show how all this bureaucracy is trying to rat on each other and deceive people. It can be funny and informative.
