The coronavirus outbreak may occur quite rapidly.

The Belarusian authorities have been ignoring the coronavirus pandemic, neither they have informed the people about the simplest preventive measures. Ex-Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Belarus Stanislau Shushkevich has told this in a comment to Gordon.

“I mostly stay at home now. As I can see from my window, there are not many people outside. However, my wife says the streets can be rather crowded in the city center. Belarusians have stocked some groceries in order not to go outside too often. No panic though. I meet with our doctors quite often. I appreciate their work highly. These are honest, respectable, professional people. I’m afraid they are taking much greater risk than they deserve,” Shushkevich says.

According to him, Lukashenka has little idea of epidemiology, so he tends to underestimate the threat.

“In our country, even the preventive measures are not as widely popularized as, for instance, in Poland or Ukraine. I think Lukashenka has little idea of such things. His old-school soviet upbringing, and the boasting of physical fitness are dangerous for the country. As this is ridiculous - to offer combating the coronavirus with tractor, alcohol, and sport,” the politician notes.

He believes that all need to be on extra alert because of the COVID-19 spread.

“An outbreak may occur rather rapidly. And I think that the state is not taking all the measures it must take. Meanwhile, a WHO representative comes to us, praising Belarus for keeping things well. Well, the numbers may be not bad. But it is dangerous to get carried away by the official numbers. I think we need to be on extra alert. It is unwise to ignore a threat. This escapade of our moustached C-student Lukashenka poses a great threat to the population of Belarus,” Shushkevich summarized.
