"Lost Lots Of Time Because Of Test": Coronavirus-Infected Minsk Resident Spoke About Her Father's Death
YURY OSIPAU

Yury Osipau's disease began suddenly.

Hanna Osipava has been in Minsk infectious diseases hospital with her mother for over a week. On April 4, her father, 69-year-old Yury Osipau, died in the same hospital. The women say that he infected them with coronavirus. Initially the disease was like a cold, but a few days later Yury got a severe form of pneumonia. Anna is convinced that if the infection was diagnosed during the test, her father could still be alive, the website of the Belsat TV channel writes.

Yury Osipau was 69 years old, an engineer by education, before he retired he worked for the National Bank. The man neither drank nor smoked, once enjoyed doing a lot of sport, but because of his age and heart problems he did it less often. According to Anna, the disease started suddenly. The Minchan didn't go out, only for a walk to the park and the pharmacy.

"Dad didn't have a cold, but suddenly his throat got sick. We called a doctor, he said there was no virus. The next day another doctor came, said he had laryngitis and prescribed medication. My mother and I were sick then, too. What kind of laryngitis can three people have if it's not an infectious disease?"

Hanna went to the polyclinic number 3 herself to be tested for COIVD-19. The woman works in the tourism industry: she has many contacts with foreigners, she often works at embassies. At that time her parents were swabbed for coronavirus, but the results were not yet available.

"I barely made it to the clinic. I have asthma, I really asked to be examined because it could be late. They refused, because I didn't go abroad: they said there was no reason, and for each test it is necessary to write an explanatory note".

Antibiotics did not help Yury, pneumonia developed, and a couple of days later he was taken to the hospital № 10. The next day it became known that the coronavirus test was positive. The man was taken to an infectious disease hospital, and his wife was taken there as well. Hanna notes that the X-rays do not show coronavirus pneumonia, it is visible only during a CT scan.

"My mother's X-rays showed nothing. After my parents were hospitalized, they put me in the infectious disease clinic, too. The doctor who did the exam was surprised I was coughing while my lungs were clean. Later, I had a CT scan done. We lost so much time! It is impossible to do a test: a person is hospitalized when he is already in a very serious condition. If Dad had gone straight to the infectious disease hospital, he might still be alive. It's scary to think how many people could die just because we don't have quarantine".

Hanna notes that all the family members had different symptoms: the father had a runny nose and swollen eyes, and the mother had a clean nose, but a very strong suffocating cough.

"You must pay attention to your condition and see a doctor immediately. It's cynical to say that those infected with coronavirus are to blame themselves. I have bronchial asthma, my mom had oncology. We have this kind of ecology, we all have problems. Everybody after 60 years has chronic diseases and health problems."

Now Hanna and her mother are in a double ward. It's too early to talk about recovery. Heavy coughing doesn't back down, temperature keeps at 38 degrees. The women have agreed to be treated with experimental malaria medication. Hanna is grateful to the doctors of the infectious diseases hospital in the capital. She says they are fighting for every patient's life.

"Obviously, this is the first time our doctors have found themselves in this situation. "The experimental drugs are being tried, each one needs an individual approach. Nurses are with us all the time, they come to check us even at night."

According to the interlocutor, there was a queue in the waiting room the night she was admitted to the hospital, so Hanna does not believe in the official figures for the number of patients. Her father was cremated on April 4. Yury Osipau's friends helped with the funeral. The relatives have not yet received a death certificate.
